Survivor
Testimonials
I had cycled before my diagnosis. But never did I get this much benefit from it. The physical activity is great for body, mind and spirit! The sense of accomplishment, the sense of control that once seemed lost, that’s what I enjoy most! Being around others who feel the same is inspiring every week. Our cycling escorts and spin instructor adapt to each individual rider’s level. They always seem to understand any limitations that treatments may put on a rider and they always work with us to accomplish our goals.
I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate with such an inspiring group and in a truly fun activity. The volunteers, the sponsors and the participant members have joined together to make this a spectacular program! Thank you!

Welcome
Welcome to the Interlakes Foundation Wellness
Program website. This site is dedicated to the promotion
of physical activities centered around cycling for
cancer survivors. Physical activity can improve the
quality of life in survivors by making the body stronger
and more fit. Fitness levels can be achieved which
exceed pre-diagnosis fitness. This can result in less
fatigue, improved muscle strength and stamina, weight
control and increased self-esteem in addition to other
known benefits.

- 07 Sep '06 -2006 Ride For Your Life
Sandwiched between rain and more rain, Saturday, August 26th was a fine day – in lots of ways! First, no rain! Second, 193 cyclists of all skill levels took to the roads – and the canal path. Third, significant funds were raised to benefit our Interlakes Foundation Wellness Program. And, best, everyone who started completed their chosen route safely without injury or illness. (more...)

- 07 Aug '06 -Cancer Survival and Benefit of Exercise
Two new studies just published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology August 1st issue demonstrate that physical activity equivalent to 30-60 minutes of brisk walking 4 to 5 times per week (9-18 MET-hours per week) can decrease the recurrance rate and decrease mortality due to colon cancer by about 50%! This benefit was not correlated with the physical activity level prior to cancer diagnosis and was only related to the post-diagnosis physical activity level. The linked editorial from the JCO summarizes the findings. This is very exciting news and should encourage you to stay active.
